Have you ever sewn something and every step of the way, you say, "This is going to be SO awesome." And you just can't wait to finish it. Then you finish it and all you can say is "crap" and then die a little bit inside?

That happened here with the Washi Dress by Made By Rae. But let's take a step back because there's a lot more to it.

So, let's start by talking about how much I love the Washi Dress. Yes, I love it. You can probably guess that I have a sizable stash of fabrics and I'm so happy to find a pattern that can use up some of my quilting weight cottons. My only regret is that there are not sleeves that don't have a gathered cap. I can't wear gathered cap sleeves. But if you can, definitely grab the expansion pack!

And it works great with my baby bump! That's a win win if I ever saw one. You will notice in these pictures that my bump looks smaller than some of my other photos. No, it isn't some trick and no I'm not binding my belly or anything crazy. It is just the way the bodice doesn't pull in too close at my underbust. Do you know what that means? That means post partum, it isn't going to hug my post partum belly and make me self conscious. Excellent.

And if you're a nursing mama, a hack to add a zipper front bodice so that you can have a pretty dress AND nurse your baby.

So you're probably now completely baffled. I just basically told you all the ways I love this pattern. And if you look at the pictures, you're probably thinking, but that looks great. You'd be right. You know what isn't right? Static. I forgot how bad the dry climate plus synthetic fabrics can be. So I am heartbroken. This beautiful floral print peach skin fabric from Stylish Fabric is a complete waste for me. I can't wear it here. Just putting it on my body and boom, static, everywhere. But it is SO amazingly beautiful and someone should make something great with it.

So, to make up for it, I made another Washi in quilting cotton. I love the keyhole neckline on this one. The fit is perfect. It is comfy and you know I LOVE these hot pink tights! You know what I don't love? The drape of the skirt. :( It definitely emphasizes the bump. That's ok for now when the bump can be 100% on display.

So what's a seamstress to do? Softer, drapier cotton fabrics. Shirting, cotton voile or even double gauze! Until my tummy is flat again, I won't be able to make this in quilting cotton, but that just means FABRIC SHOPPING! WOOT!

And you my readers win too! I've got at least 1 1/2 yards of this fabric left. And since I can't realistically use it for me, I'll be shipping it off to one lucky reader! So register below for a chance to win what I have left.

  1. I love peachskin, but I have only sewn with it once. I used it for the tulip skirt on a Bluezette dress for my daughters. We don't have to deal with static much here.

    1. I just noticed it's 1/2 yard so for me would be out of the question, but a pretty little dress for a friend's baby would be great! :)

    2. I miss typed in both. It should be 1 1/2 yard. Which should be plenty to make something nice. :)

  6. Maybe a skirt I've never actually worked with peach skin so I'm not familiar with it.

  7. I would make my daughter a Flutterby Romper or maybe a belt for me. I've never used Peachskin though.

  8. Is it 1/2 yard or 2 yards? It says two in the blog and 1/2 in the giveaway. If it were 2 I would make myself a skirt from McCall's 6608. If it is 1/2 yd, I will make a simple skirt for one of my girls!

    1. Thanks for catching that Brooke! It is actually 1 1/2 yards plus a ton of tails. Should be good for making almost anything.

  10. Hm..decisions decisions. Maybe I'd make my own first Washi because I don't have static issues here!

  15. My first thought to make would be boardshorts but with 1 1/2 yards, I'd have to think of something that takes more yardage. Your dresses are gorgeous. Just wipe down the inside with a dryer sheet to get rid of the static cling.

  17. This would make a great tunic for me or 2 for my girls. I was also going to suggest trying a dryer sheet for the static like Diane said above - no reason you shouldn't wear a dress that looks great on you!
