The HBC PPS has 4 sleeve lengths, dress or tunic length, an option to make t-shirts, skirts (with single or double layers and 4 or 8 (or more) sectiosn) and is designed for panels. That said, I have yet to use it for panels.

If you've been reading my "Not Back To School" mini posts, you know that Back to School for other kids means more of the same for us. The one thing that does change is that we will start spending WAY more time outside. Why?
1- I hate summer
2- If everyone else is at school, the kid friendly places are mostly deserted
3- Fall weather is great play outside all day weather.


There is one catch here for us and that is Wyoming. You see Wyoming has some fickle crazy weather. Right now it is August and our highs are somewhere between 69-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Lows, 44-51. How do you even dress for that? The answer of course is LAYERS.

Now I love layers. I love cool crisp fall weather and layers are the little bits of fuzzy warm goodness that bring me joy. So of course, the Big Little Pathfinders Vest was PERFECT.

Pathfinders basically describes our fall weather activities. We're always looking for the unbeaten path. An interesting new place to explore. And so it felt like a match made in heaven.

I made the Rounded Hood, curved dipped back with button placket. But you could easily make a ton of different combinations including with/without hood, flutter sleeves, buttons, toggles, curved versus straight hems, extended length and a super fun "Crossroads" front version that is available to newsletter subscribers.

Whew, that's a lot of choices. Since we tackle so much different weather, I have plans to make different combinations for varying cold-freezing weather. I made this one out of fabrics from my stash. It is like they were made for each other! Due to some very careful hand stitching, this vest is completely reversible. Side one is a purple and black herringbone flannel. The same flannel I used here for my Winter Wear Designs Provence Coat. The inner is a really stable ponte that I bought from Cali Fabrics. I'm sad to use up the last of this ponte, but it was definitely for a good cause. The ponte was stable enough that I made zero adjustments to the pattern despite pairing together a woven and a knit.

The pattern over all is pretty great, but of course, I need to tell you at least one thing I didn't like. SO here goes. The pattern does not include button placement on the button placket extension. So I guessed how many and where to place my buttons. Definitely NOT a deal breaker. Especially since depending on the fabric you use and the look you are going for, you're going to want more or fewer buttons any way.

The best part (and the real reason I was excited to sew up this pattern) is that you can mix and match the animal ears from the Wild Things Coat with the Pathfinder Vest. That might actually be more cuteness than I can take!

Yes, we wear shoes, sometimes, LOL

All the kids here in Cheyenne, Wyoming are getting ready for the first day of school. School starts Wednesday and I'm sure there are kids who are excited, but also kids who are dreading the whole school schedule.

However, we homeschool, and mostly homeschool year round. No, that doesn't mean we do school 365 days a year. Only that we don't take a 3 month break in the middle of the summer. So, while the other kids are picking out their first day of school outfits, my kids are just barely getting out of their pajamas. To celebrate "NOT Back To School", I will be posting a daily photo of what they're wearing when we start our school day. Nothing fancy, just the things they pick for the day. They may or may not brush their hair. I don't care if they do their school work in their pj's so consider yourself warned. ;)

It just so happens that today, we had to go to the bank early in the morning. So unlike our usual leisurely morning, we were up, dressed (with hair brushed no less) and ready to go BEFORE 9 am. In all seriousness, there are mornings where I don't even get out of bed before 9 am. Try not to be jealous, there are certainly drawbacks too (like not getting kids to bed until 10 pm because the oldest didn't get home from gymnastics until 8:45).

So, for today, a beautiful, warm (but not too hot Wyoming morning)

Do you remember my 40 Garments in 40 Days Series? I did a horrible job organizing my series, so there is no easy to follow HTML (DOH). But you can search "40 Garments" in the search box and get the ENTIRE series. But let me break it down for you. For 6 weeks, starting March 1st, I sewed my eldest daughter's ENTIRE spring/summer wardrobe, which was compromised of over 40 garments. Thankfully some of the items were things I had sewn before so I wasn't sewing all 40 garments in that time but the series ended up with like 49 garments or something, so it was a LOT of sewing. There was some serious hustle going on over here. AND I managed to keep my blog full of content to. Crazy, I know.

Well, I won't be doing that for fall. Not because I'm unwilling (although I'm thankful to not commit to something so big). It is actually because so much of what I sewed before still fits. #FTW! So yes, I will be filling in little gaps, but I won't have to sew all the things. And yes, I suspect that before we see spring again (perhaps in late April or mid May) I'll be filling in gaps again as she gets taller but that is a lot easier than filling it all in in one fell swoop.

So today, I'm sharing with you, my daughter's favorite patterns. For the record, this is NOT about my favorite patterns. This is 100% her picks. The ones she loves best and prefers. When it comes to kids it is 50% style and 50% comfort. Some kids are only comfortable in dresses. Some kids hate leggings. And some kids couldn't care less (sadly I don't have one of those, LOL).

So, if your kid is into lounge wear. Comfort and a little bit of girly twirl (but not too much). Then this might just be the pattern round up for you! And if your kid ISN'T into those things, then come back in a few days where I cover my middle daughter's "all leggings all the time" wardrobe. And if that isn't your daughter either, I've still got one more. Shirts

Sew By Pattern Pieces Fun Tee is a slim fit tee with 2 sleeve lengths and 2 different sleeves. Regular and puff. Previously we had another favorite t-shirt pattern. But apparently, it is all about the puff sleeve, so this is our new favorite. She wants all her t-shirts to have puff sleeves. YES, I could have redrafted a puff sleeve for our favorite t-shirt. But why reinvent the wheel? I have this pattern. It is well drafted. I'll stick with the least amount of work. And that would be just printing this pattern in her size. This is my review of the Fun Tee.

Raglans of course are a huge love over here. My daughter pointed out that the ones she loves best are those that are color blocked. That left us 2 favorites. The KBSD Color Block Raglan and the Patterns for Pirates Jolly Roger Raglan. The Color Block Raglan has color block written right into the name. It has a fun triangle color block that can be used on the front or back of the pattern. I used it in the 40 garments series.

The P4P Jolly Roger Raglan is a favorite because it has multiple hem line options. She likes options, especially a bottom band because she likes her shirts longer. She also likes when I match the sleeves, neckband and bottom band for a nice pop of color. Thankfully raglans are fast and easy. So you can be sure there will be more in her future. You can see my version from the 40 garments series here.

Love Notions Origami Tunic is a fun tunic with a funky hankerchief hem. It includes 3 neckline variations (banded, turtleneck or cowl), and 4 sleeve lengths (sleeveless, short, 3/4 and long). This isn't the typical thing you might find in "lounge" wear but my daughter loves that this top twirls without all the frilly, ruffly dressiness of a dress. It is comfy, cozy and while she wears it with loose pants, I let her be her own person. I have a brief blurb about it in this blog post here, but I'm hoping to give it its own blog post soon. Sweaters

The Max and Meena All Ears Hoodie is SO fun. It comes in sizes Newborn-16/18. Last year when I made the 16/18 for my niece I tried it on and it fit me. That makes for an extra versatile pattern. I could have a different animal every year for my daughter, and we still wouldn't get them all. There are 13 different animals, 2 different types of hoods and 3 sleeve lengths. That makes 936 versions when you add in all the sizes. Or 78 versions if you only count the different versions but not different sizes. Either way, a lot of different hoodies. And of course it isn't a lounge wardrobe if there are no hoodies. You can see our 3 hoodies from last year here.

Hey June Hatteras has 3 views. A pull over hoodie, a sweatshirt and a zip up hoodie. Ironically, my daughter has declared that she hates zip up hoodies (can't be my kid) and only likes hoods on pull overs. I did of course also do a half zip pull over with a hood too. So of course that means we'll get a repeat of the Hatteras that I made in the 40 Garments in 40 Days Series.





Pants

Winter Wear Designs Aviators are our go to joggers. Yes, there are other joggers out there. But both my daughter and I simply LOVE the Aviators. I've blogged them no less than 4 times that I can tell. We have pairs in poly fleece, french terry, and jersey. We have pairs with no pockets. Pairs with front pockets. Pairs with back welt pockets and combinations of front and back pockets. I still need to tackle the cargo pocket and triangle cut out but for us, they're strictly decorative and my daughter isn't a "just for decoration" kind of girl. She is all about practicality. You can see her poly fleece version here and my french terry ones here (I'm actually wearing them right now). So no doubt, I'm sure she'll need another pair or two before winter comes. The ONLY other pants she likes are the Bella Sunshine Designs Bow Tie Leggings. Now before you go sayings, "BUT THOSE ARE LEGGINGS", let me remind you that the Bow Tie Leggings includes a slim fit pant. They are fitted in the hip and then cut straight down to the ankle. Not too flared (she hates that) and not tight either. It is the perfect balance. I did review the leggings version here. And used the slim fit pants several times in my 40 Garments in 40 Days Series.


Dresses

Pollywoggles Autumn Grace is a dress or tunic drafted for poly fleece. My daughter loves poly fleece. If it keeps her warm, then it is welcome in her wardrobe. This is the ONLY dress she doesn't mind wearing. She couldn't tell me why, only that it is her favorite. I love that there are so many options (hood, cowl and crew neck) and she loves that it is warm. Sounds like a win to me! I of course blogged it here.

So I'm back, trying to redeem myself and I think I did a really good job!

My pattern for today is the Jessica Girls Twirl Skirt by 5 Berries. This pattern is a pretty straight forward one. 2 rectangles for the skirt, 2 rectangles for the ruffle and add some elastic. The pattern only includes a list of measurements for cutting out rectangles. It walks you through which parts of the skirt to finish, where to line things up, etc. Super simple.

Now, perhaps I missed it (although I did reread the pattern 4 times), but I didn't see a chart for the elastic measurement. Please tell me I'm wrong? I did send a message to the designer, I just haven't heard back yet.

So I totally guessed the elastic size without remeasuring my daughter. And fail. I made it too big. Whoops. So these photos include a safety pin in the back to keep her skirt from falling down. I'll fix that another time.

Now, let's get back to the fabric. This fabric is PERFECT for this design. All of the cuts are made along the straight lines of the weave of the fabric. This does take a lot more time and precision than zooming along with a rotary cutter, but the results are worth it. Now the skirt and the ruffle are actually from the same fabric. This super cool Wonka's Double Sided Plaid was practically made for this pattern, with perfectly matching plaids on front and back.

Miss me? As much as I enjoy blogging, I didn't want to miss a minute of the Frontier Days fun. So far we have:

As well as dealt with a fever of 103 AND a nice black eye. I was reassured by my nearly 4 year old cowgirl that cowgirls are tough and strong, so don't worry about her.

Unlike some bloggers that are avid photographers, I'm a seamstress that takes photos, so I don't have photos to go with our adventures. But let me just say, we're having a grand ol' time. We still have plans to attend the "Indian Village" (their term, not mine), petting farm, Old Frontier Town, and Old West Museum. And when that is all done, the following week is the Laramie County Fair. Whew. We're crazy busy.

So, back to today's sew. This is my last in my series of Tadah! Pleatie sews. As I said before, I was given this pattern for review. All opinions remain my own. For today, I made the shortsuit in size 4 for my not quite 4 year old. Construction was easier on the shorts than the dress since you don't have to gather anything.

I do want to talk about the drafting for the shorts. The shorts are meant to be worn as EITHER bloomers or shorts. If you're familiar with drafting, you know that bloomers and shorts are NOT drafted the same way. Bloomers are often drafted with zero difference between the front and back rise. Shorts have a certain ratio of front to back rise, with the back being longer than the front.

These shorts do have a nice smooth u-shaped crotch curve. However, the difference in the front and back rise are not very significant. This is perfect for bloomers. It actually works fairly well in this case as shorts because the bodice is cut straight across and you want to be sure that the fabric can make it up to the bodice and not cause a wedgie.

I will say, that I do wish that the bodice had a longer front than back. This pattern cuts straight cross my kids' belly buttons and I think it would be a tiny bit more comfy it if went under their bellies. But obviously, this is a specific body shape problem and not a drafting problem. If your child has no more baby fat OR doesn't mind the pattern cutting across the tummy, then you'll be fine.  That said, that is an easy hack for me to do for the next time, and there will definitely be a next time. :D

I was torn when making these as a romper for my 4 year old. I wasn't 100% sure she'd be able to undo the snaps in the front quickly enough for bathroom breaks and I know she is independent and won't want me helping her in the bathroom. But its just so cute, and since she won't be going anywhere without me any time soon, I feel ok with her wearing this whenever she wants.

Yesterday's blog post and photos were so good, I didn't think I could top it, but today's photos are just as amazing and so is the dress!

So yesterday I talked about the Pleatie as a blouse and definitely super cute. Today I've got the dress version. I made the size 5 for my average sized 5 year old. My only deviation from the pattern is that I pleated the skirt into place rather than gathering it into place. For the record, gathering would be better, but for some reason, I have this personal aversion to hand gathering fabric. I know all the tricks to doing it, I just can't stand it. Pleating works just fine in this case.

So I do have a few notes about the pattern in size 5 for a dress.

#1- my daughter doesn't like the high front neckline. She'd prefer it was lower. For a top with no collar, I could easily scoop it out. BUT, if you also have a kid that doesn't like high necklines, consider using one of the larger sized necklines so you can still add your collar of choice.
#2- Apparently my daughter doesn't like things going around her belly button. Next time I'll add about 1" length to the bodice and take 1" away from the skirt. That will make this more drop waist, which is the style she prefers anyway.
#3- When you go to put the waistband, skirt and bodice together, the instructions may confuse you. I had to read them 6 times. For some reason, my brain kept saying, that's not right, because you put the skirt and bodice wrong sides together. I'm so used to flipping things right side out (like the facing) that for some reason I couldn't understand why we were piecing it together that way. BUT, follow the directions, they're correct!

The last full week of July is Frontier Days here in Cheyenne Wyoming. As "The Daddy of them All", Frontier Days is a 10 day long outdoor rodeo and cowboy celebration. All things cowboy are celebrated and I'm so excited to get in on the action!

In trying to decide what to do with this HUGE celebration I knew it had to be something really great. HOWEVER, seeing as we're still trying to get settled into our new place, I also knew I couldn't go too over the top because there just wasn't enough time. I spent a lot of time browsing pinterest and looking for ideas. And then, I knew that what I needed was a versatile pattern that could be the same, but different for my 3 girls. So this week I have 3 versions of the Tadah! Pleatie Dress and Shortsuit (PDS for short) for your viewing pleasure. Each day, I'll review the specific details of the options I choose.

I have to apologize in advance, because I'm sharing the versions out of order. BUT, to save paper, I always sew the biggest size first and then cut the pattern down as I go. So, up first is the PDS as a blouse. Now, if you own this pattern already, you know this isn't one of the options that comes with the pattern. BUT, it is on the Tadah! blog and it was the perfect little touch to show just how versatile this pattern is. The skirt paired here is a simple gathered skirt.

Due to the insanely hot weather we've been having, I opted for the sleeveless blouse WITHOUT pleats or collar. I figured any extra piece of fabric would make the blouse just too hot.

The pattern comes in sizes 1-12. There are no layers, but most of the pattern pieces are nested in such a way that the lines do not overlap. Each size is a different color, but that doesn't help you if you are printing in black/white. That said, I didn't have any problems cutting out any of the pieces EXCEPT the facings. Due to all the curved lines on the facings, there was a lot of overlap. Cutting out the first size was fine. But you would need to reprint the facings if you wanted to make a smaller size as the overlap cuts off pieces of each smaller size.

With a pattern line this, you really have 3 options for finishing the neck and armscye; full lining, bias tape or facings. It would be very easy to do a full lining (however a bit bulky and maybe hot). Bias tape can be tricky for some people and it can take up more time making the tape. I may consider this as a way to add more color to another version. This pattern, however, comes with facings. It includes 2 different ways to finish the facings, a quick/cheater way with a serger and a more finished way with bias tape. If you know me, you know I went with the quick way. ;)

The placket is very nicely done and all the pieces fit together well. I absolutely recommend putting in the interfacing on the placket as it not only provides reinforcement for the buttons but it also makes it easier to fold the placket into place. I opted for kam snaps. Partially because they're fast. Partially because I'm lazy, but mainly because I have about 50 different colors (about 100 each) of kamsnaps left over from when I used to make diapers (about 4 years ago) and I'd really like to use them up before I die. This top took 7 sets of kamsnaps (14 total) If you do the math, I'll need to use about 5000 kamsnaps, which works out to about 357 more shirts.

I found this perfect fabric at my local Walmart. $2.50 a yard. it is a poly/cotton blend, which makes it breathable but wrinkles less. It is a nice light weight and came in 4 coordinating colors. I hope you like it, because you better believe I bought all the coordinates. :)

I have to admit, this has been my most fun blog tour yet!

When I first signed up, I had a pretty simple plan. Each year I make my kids PJ's for Christmas, so Christmas PJ's was perfect. A simple Riley Sleep Shirt and a Christmas Applique.  It was a good idea honestly and I wouldn't blame anyone for stopping there.

But then, I learned that the local Cattle Drive would be the week before my blog post was due.

A real live cattle drive! Talk about living in cowboy country! So I present to you a Cowboy Christmas in July!

Attending the cattle drive meant getting up at the crack of down and driving way out to the outskirts of town. It meant messy hair and pajamas. PERFECT for the tour.



I used the EYMM Riley Sleep Shirt in a size 4 for my nearly 4 year old. I love the length on this shirt and while I did technically size up, I'm happy to know that my daughter will be able to wear this for more than just a few weeks. I used the same woven fabric from the applique to do the hem facing, which is a great way to tie in the fabrics.

I do want to note that this pattern uses a sleeve cut on the fold for this pattern. For a loose fitting pajama that is ok with me. Also, there are no layers. However, the way the pattern is nested this really isn't a problem. Sizes newborn-4t are on one set of pages and 5-18 are on a second set. This definitely saves paper.

I had planned on sewing for all 3 of my girls but ran out of time. Even though I did not end up sewing up my larger size 7 at all, I want to mention some notes about the size 7. When you match up the sleeve on the bodice, the seam allowance matches up, HOWEVER the side seam does not match up. Normally, if you're going to find a problem, it would be the opposite (that the side seam lines up, but not the seam allowance). So, technically this isn't a problem, but I did contact Kymy of EYMM to see what was going on. According to Kymy, this pattern is on her list for an upgrade, including adding in layers (YAY).

But, even without the upgrade, I love that this pattern is a great, gender neutral sew. Comfy, easy to wear and begins at newborn size. And you can even get the women's size for mommy and me sets!
